Likened to the grandeur and glory of the Pacific Coast Trail, Chile’s new Route of Parks tour hugs the opposite end of the Americas from Puerto Montt to the southern tip of Chilean Patagonia featuring 1,700 miles of pristine landscapes, fragile ecosystems, and diverse cultures. This new trip route is a grand display of Chile’s most epic landscapes, including the Andes Mountains, temperate rain forests, lakes, and volcanoes. On this trip to Chile, travel to six of the new route’s 17 national parks, staying in charming lodges to rest properly before adventurous daytime excursions with new Chilean friends—by boat, horse, or even helicopter.

I am so excited about this itinerary, which explores two of the newest parks. Anyone who loves to hike, loves scenery, road trips, loves being in the middle of nowhere, and is into seeing conservation in action, will love this trip.

Day

1 – 3

After one night in Santiago, fly to Puerto Montt, then onto Chaiten for two days of hiking in Pumalín National Park Watch for the last existing Alerce trees.

Day

4 – 5

En route to the village of Puyuhuapi, visit Corcovado National Park for views of the splendid Yelcho Glacier In Queulat National Park, walk through virgin forest, seeking black woodpecker and the ringdove.

Explore Coyhaique, the capital of the Aysén region, with optional adventures including gastronomical experiences, horseback riding, rafting, and hiking through the national reserve.

Cerro Castillo National Park is where you admire the glaciers that feed into the magnificent Laguna Verde on a moderately challenging hike through the Lenga forest.

8

Navigate through the river delta to arrive at Laguna San Rafael National Park for views of spectacular calving blue glaciers Discover diverse terrains: swamps, jungles, and sandy beaches.

9 – 12

Drive to Chacabuco Valley to visit the marble caves, raft along Rio Baker, and roam the protected lands of Patagonia National Park Chile before departing for home.
