Splendors of the Silk Road: Xian

By Alysa Pakkidis | February 10, 2015

My journey along the Silk Road began in Xian with this view of the fabled Terracotta Warriors. What a perfect beginning!

Often called “the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century,” the warriors are displayed in a site that is far more vast than I had imagined. Every soldier is unique and it’s easy to lose yourself studying the skillful craft manifest in every single figure. The sense of the past, of the rich and deep history here, was palpable. The magnitude of it all was incredibly impressive and suggested something of the magnitude of our extraordinary journey to come.

I was also lucky enough to be in Xian during the Harvest Moon Festival. Walking through the Muslim Quarter at night, I experienced an exciting mix of colorful sights, sounds, and delicious aromas of street food, all alongside exploding fireworks. It was a real treat to be there celebrating with everyone.
